Candide, Aalto-Musiktheater, 2026
Under the precise and thoughtful direction of Per-Otto Johansson, the brilliantly performing Essener Philharmoniker revealed the full stylistic range of Bernstein’s demanding and colorful score. The orchestra impressed with dynamic precision, infectious dance-like energy, and transparent tonal colors.

Candide, Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, 2026
Per-Otto Johansson conducts the Essen Philharmonic and forms a consistently exciting musical flow from this diversity. He savours the rhythmic sharpness as well as the lyrical passages, lets the jazzy sprinkles flash springily and leads the large ensemble scenes with a sure sense of balance. The orchestra plays with remarkable presence, transparent in sound and at the same time of rich volume where it is required. Johansson not only holds the different styles together, but also makes them tangible in their diversity.

The Wreckers, Landestheater Detmold, 2026
The chorus, essential to the plot, appeared as an inseparable group of villagers pursuing only their own interests and showing no empathy for people in need. Per-Otto Johansson carefully guided the Detmold State Theatre Symphony Orchestra through the colorful and highly emotional score, paying close attention to balance. When events came to a head at the end of the opera, with passions running high, Johansson proved himself to be a wise helmsman who ensured the right proportions.

Per-Otto Johansson at the podium of the Detmold Symphony Orchestra makes the drama of this score palpable in an impressive way. [...]
The musical direction of the evening was by Per-Otto Johansson, the GMD of the Detmold State Theatre. Johansson let the Symphonic Orchestra revel in Ethel Smyth's music and let the orchestra build true sound towers of great emotionality in the dramatic moments of the opera. Already with the masterful overture of "The Wreckers" Johansson showed his own enthusiasm for this score and the prelude to the last act was of very special, almost filigree, beauty. GMD Johansson led the premiere with a sure hand and with a lot of passion. He could absolutely rely on the brilliantly playing symphonic orchestra. In the end, cheers and ovations from the completely enthusiastic audience also for her and her conductor.

A little humanity in rough seas - "The Wreckers" at the Landestheater Detmold – DAS OPERNMAGAZIN
This did not detract from the jubilation of the Detmold premiere audience, which was also due to the gripping orchestral interpretation of the concentrated orchestra under the direction of chief conductor Per-Otto Johansson.
