Spungin, Jonah

With a voice “bursting with power, and full of colours” (Der Opernfreund), Canadian baritone Jonah Spungin is known for the strength, expressiveness, and warmth of his voice, as well as his commanding and composed stage presence, portraying the many fathers, nobles, and villains of the repertoire with ease.

Spungin has appeared regularly in productions in Canada at the Canadian Opera Company and Calgary Opera. He made his European debut in 2022 with Vadstena-Akademien and quickly made a name for himself with subsequent debuts with Norrlandsoperan in 2023, Malmö Opera and Landestheater Detmold in 2024, Opera Hedeland in 2025, and his upcoming debut with Göteborgsoperan in 2026.

While particularly celebrated for his performances in the Kavalier repertoire, performing roles such as Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Jack Rance (La fanciulla del West), Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen), and Il Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) to great critical and audience acclaim, Spungin has also been featured heavily in a broad repertoire of contemporary and 20th century works, frequently as national or world premieres. Such roles include Winston (1984), Lawrence (The Wreckers), Tsargo (Adriana Mater), Jan Nyman (Breaking the Waves), King Dovid (Bas-Sheve), King Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors), John/Fantasma (Fantasma), and Athenodorus the Philosopher (Ghost Opera). Other notable roles include Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Schaunard (La Bohème), Ping (Turandot), Marco (Gianni Schicchi), Marullo (Rigoletto), and Geôlier (Dialogues des Carmelites).

Equally comfortable on the concert and recital stage, Spungin has performed repertoire such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Duruflé’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Hercules, and Zelenka’s Missa Votiva with ensembles including the COC Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Companie Baroque Montréal, and the Ottawa Choral Society. Spungin has also performed several recitals, the most notable of which, Les Adieux: Ballads, Legends, and Folksongs, was recorded and broadcast by the CBC, as well as presented as part of the Richard Bradshaw Free Concert Series at the Canadian Opera Company. A lifelong guitarist, Spungin enjoys incorporating his own arrangements of works for guitar and voice into his recitals and especially weaving Canadian folk music – typically considered to be outside of the “classical” genre – into his programming.

Spungin has also been involved in the workshop and development of several new works, both opera and concert, with organizations including the Canadian Opera Company, Calgary Opera, Norrlandsoperan, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and McGill’s Schulich School of Music.

Spungin is an alumnus of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio and the Calgary Opera Emerging Artists Program and was a member of the Fest Ensemble of Landestheater Detmold from 2024-2026. He holds an MMus Voice and Opera and a BMus Voice Performance from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. He has participated in the prestigious International Meistersinger Academy, and been a prizewinner and laureate of multiple competitions, including Opéra de Montréal’s Talent Gala, Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques, and the OCS New Discoveries Competition.
